LIDO DI FERMO, Italy (AP) – Mads Wurtz Schmidt, a five-man rider, won the sixth and penultimate round of the Tireno-Adriatic race on Monday, with Tour de France champion Tadey Pogasara remaining unbeaten.
It was the first victory for 26-year-old Danish Wurtz Schmidt, who won the World Cup time-trial experience at both the junior and 23-year-olds.
The second was won by Brent Van Moer, and the third by Simone Velasco.
Wurtz Schmidt was part of a small group of riders who traveled 23 miles (14 miles) from the main park to Castroraimondo on the Adriatic coast, 169 km (105 miles) from Lido di Fermo.
The stage, which was mostly flat with some slight hills, ended with five laps of the circle, և the main box had enough space to catch the break, but the sprint teams were not organized fast enough.
“It’s a great relief to finally win the World Tour five years from now,” said Wurtz Schmidt. “I used my opportunity today; we worked well in the shutdown phase.”
Würtz Schmidt of Israel Start-Up Nation finished in 3 hours and 42 minutes. The main package, including all general leaders, lasted more than a minute.
Overall, Pogačar leads Wout van Aert with a score of 1:15. Mikel Landa is third with 3:00.
The British rider Simon Carr collided with the island in the middle of the stage, but got back on his bike and continued to move.
The race ends on Tuesday in San Benedetto del Tronto with a completely smooth individual time of 10.1 kilometers (6.3 miles).
“Tomorrow,” said Pogatar, “the important thing is to stay in the lead.”
On Saturday, Tirreno will be followed by the Milan-San Remo classic, although Pogasar has said he has no plans to enter the one-day classic along the Italian Riviera.
