UW Huskies finish Stanford volleyball after marathon

It was a collection of volleyball that never seemed to end.

The rallies were getting better and more intense as the decisive third set went on Sunday at the Alaska Airlines Arena between longtime rivals Washington’s Stanford.

Finally, in Husky’s eighth set, they were transformed into Lauren Sanders և Samantha Drexler’s block, which was just one of UW’s touching 22-25, 25-12, 33-31, 18-25, 16-14 highlights. A victory that ended the sweep of the weekend with two games.

“You want your team to face such a test this season, են Stanford certainly brought it today,” said UW coach Keegan Cook, whose Pac-12 Huskies improved to 15-3 over the weekend. regular season. “Both programs deserve the level of volleyball they played, the strength at some really powerful moments. “Everyone needed to know who we are and what we are doing to win.”

Even after losing that third set, the short Stanford (2-8) responded with a dominant victory in the fourth set, leading 9-6 in the fifth set, while Washington came together to win the set և match.

It was a typical Pac-12 game between two traditional powers. Stanford has won five of the last eight Pac-12 titles, և UW’s the other three in that period, even if the Stanford record ում’s 11th place in the conference is not normal.

The cardinal has won the last two national championships, a record nine overall, but it has a young team that hit COVID-19 hard, canceling 10 games և training restrictions.

On Sunday, Stanford had only eight healthy players, but they were enough to scare the Huskies enough to fall 0-7 on the road.

“Obviously this is the best 2-8 team in the country,” Cook said.

The cardinal forced UW to work hard in four sets on Friday, and on Sunday it became clear that Stanford was not going to become easy foil again.

Stanford took early control in the first set, and although UW remained in range, the Cardinal never lost by a margin of 1: 1. After a 1-point break. Washington dominated in the second set, equalizing the match, placing a fantastic third set.

The Huskies were on the verge of winning the set 24-22, but Stanford scored the next two points. The Cardinals won by a lead of 26-25 և 28-27, but the Haskell survived both.

And in a few minutes everything was over, they said.

“Just the quality of the defense that was played on both sides, the block, behind the net, you had to make a great shot to be really critical away from the kill,” Cook said. “It’s not like people hit the ball out of bounds when the score was 25. It took three or four good swings to get the kills,: it’s one of the best volleyballs I’ve seen all season. “

The Huskies had to collect for the last time in the fifth set, winning their second match.

Claire Hoffman committed 22 murders for leading the UW crime. Cook praised Shannon Crenshaw and Emma Calle for their defense. It was just enough for Haski, who closed the regular season with a pair of games at Cal (1-19), with a pair of wins to win the conference title.

Haskeri has four seniors on the roster, but the only one who is not expected to use the extra year is Maria Bogomolova.
