LONDON (AP) – Facebook’s near-independent Orientation Council said on Friday it would take longer than expected to oust former President Donald Trump’s resignation as it needs more time to weather the flood of public comment.
The giant social media council has been asked to make a final decision on whether it was justified to suspend Trump indefinitely after he incited supporters to attack the US Capitol in January.
The panel’s initial 90-day deadline for making the decision was days left.
However, “we have extended the deadline for public comment on this case, receiving more than 9,000 responses,” the statement said on Twitter. “The council’s commitment to thoroughly review all the remarks extended the case schedule in accordance with the council’s charter. We will share more information soon. ”
The council said its decision would be made public “in the coming weeks” without elaborating.
Facebook has set up a review committee to act as the final arbiter of content decisions amid fierce criticism of its inability to respond to a wave of misinformation, hate speech and other harmful content. The Board is authorized to make mandatory decisions on issues such as messages or advertisements that violate company rules.
The social media giant regularly receives thousands of messages և accounts. Since its launch in October, the board has received around 300,000 appeals from users about content decisions, but prioritizes cases that have the potential to affect many users around the world. It overturned decisions in five of the seven cases it has so far ruled on.
