The Tokyo Olympics added 12 women to the executive board, bringing it to 42%

TOKYO (AP) – The Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday made a symbolic gesture of gender equality by appointing 12 women to the body’s executive council.

The board will now have 19 women, or 42%, of its 45 members.

To accommodate new women, the size of the board was increased from 35 to 45. Several resignations on Tuesday also created more room.

This step was announced by the Executive Director Toshiro Muto after the meeting of the Executive Board. The names of the new members were expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Seiko Hashimoto, the new chairman of the organizing committee, suggested the changes. She came to power last month after 83-year-old former president Yoshiro Mori was forced to resign following derogatory comments about women.

In fact, he said, they talk a lot.

“In terms of promoting gender equality, we believe that it is necessary to work with a sense of urgency and give strong results in order to restore confidence in the organizing committee,” Hashimoto said at the start of the council meeting.

Hashimoto, a former Olympic bronze medalist in fast sports, promised to step up women’s participation in the body’s executive council when he took office. That was about 20%.

Mouto said the council would have one female vice president in seven.

Japan Aponia ranks 153rd to 121st in the World Economic Forum’s Gender Equality Rankings, and women are rarely seen in leadership positions or in the boardroom.

The move is unlikely to have a lasting impact. The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee employs about 3,500 people but will be disbanded after the postponed Olympics.

Hashimoto is scheduled to meet Wednesday at a “five-way meeting” with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons, and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike’s Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa.

Probably the main point is to allow fans to the Olympics, and if foreign fans are allowed to enter Japan aponia.

The postponed Olympic Games are scheduled to open on July 23, followed by the Paralympic Games on August 24.
