The robot artist is selling art for $ 688,888, now looking at a music career

HON KONG (AP) – Sofia is a robot of many talents. He talks, sings jokes and even makes art. In March, he caused a stir in the art world when his digital collaboration created an auction for $ 688,888 in the form of the NFT.

The sale highlighted the growing frenzy in the NFT market where people can buy digital content ownership. Each NFT has a unique numeric code stored in blockchain logs that allows anyone to verify the authenticity and ownership of items.

Hong Kong-based Hanson Robotics CEO David Hanson և Sophia co-founder has been developing robots for the past two and a half decades. He believes that in a realistic way, robots can connect with humans, assist in areas such as health and education.

Sophia is the most famous robot created by Hanson Robotics, with the ability to imitate facial expressions, talk and get to know people. In 2017, he was granted Saudi citizenship, becoming the world’s first robot citizen.

“I envisioned Sofia as a creative work that could create art,” Hanson said in an interview.

“Sophia is the pinnacle of many arts, engineering, the idea that she can then create art, it was a way for her to connect people emotionally and visually,” he said.

Sofia collaborated with the Italian painter Andrea Bonazetto, who painted portraits of Sofia. After that, Sofia developed her work through neural networks and began to create works of digital art.

The $ 688,888 digital work, titled “Sophia Instantiation,” is a 12-second video showing a portrait of Bonazetto as a digital painting of Sofia. It is accompanied by physical works painted by Sofia.

The buyer, a digital photo collector and artist known as 888 with the Twitter handle @ Crypto888crypto, later sent a photo of his picture to Sofia. The robot then worked on it, adding that image to its knowledge, drawing more strokes on its original piece.

A tweet in Sofia’s report describes the work as the first NFT collaboration between “AI, mechanical collective-artist-collector”.

“As an artist, I have computational creativity in algorithms, creating unique works,” said Sofia when asked what inspires her when it comes to art. “But my art was created in collaboration with my people, in a kind of collective intelligence, like human-artificial intelligence.”

Selling Sofia artwork as NFT is part of a growing trend. In March, the Beeple artist, whose real name is Mike Winkelmann, sold a digital work of art for about $ 70 million, breaking records, making it the most expensive digital painting ever sold.

Henri Arslanyan, PricewaterhouseCooper’s Global Crypto Leader, said NFTs give people “rights to brag” about their assets.

“And what ‘s really amazing about NFT is that it not only really allows you to show the wider world that you have it, but it really creates that connection between the NFT owner’ artists, ‘” he said. he:

It also allows the sale of art without traditional intermediaries, so that artists can communicate directly with buyers without being constrained by galleries or auction houses, Arslanyan said.

Sofia will continue to paint, said Hanson, the next step in the career of a robot can be a musician. She is working on several musical works in a project called Sophia Pop, where she collaborates with human musicians to create music և lyrics.

“We are so excited about Sofia’s painting career,” Hanson said.
