HELSINKI (AP) – Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Callas has given a positive result for COVID-19 and says she will quarantine her confidence until she recovers from the virus.
Callas, 43, who became the first woman leader of the Baltic states in January, said late Monday that she was feeling better than having any other symptoms other than a slight fever.
“I’m watching my health closely; I’ll stay home until I’m healthy,” Callas said in a Facebook post, adding that he would continue as prime minister from home, including holding a remote cabinet and other meetings.
Over the past few weeks, Estonia, a country of 1.3 million people, has seen a significant deterioration in the coronavirus situation, and the country’s health care system and hospitals have increasing problems accommodating COVID-19 patients with current resources.
On Monday, the country registered 1221 new cases of coronavirus per day, amounting to 86,086 – 728 deaths. Authorities say 711 patients with coronavirus are being treated in hospitals across the country.
The 14-day COVID-19 case awareness rate was 1,465 per 100,000 population, currently one of the highest in Europe.
