The Dutch temporarily stop hitting AstraZeneca for people under 60 years old

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) – The Dutch government announced on Friday that it was temporarily suspending the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine for people under the age of 60 after reports that a very small number of people had unusual blood clots after receiving a shot.

The Dutch decision came three days after German authorities also discontinued the AstraZeneca vaccine until the 1960s, citing new concerns about unusual blood clots in a small number of recipients.

Earlier on Friday, a Dutch watchdog group said it had received five reports of low blood clotting tissue after vaccination. All cases occurred within seven to 10 days of vaccination; և All affected are women aged 25 to 65 years.

The organization said that about 400,000 people were vaccinated with AstraZeneca in the Netherlands during the reporting of five cases.

Health Minister Hugo de Jong says the suspension is a precautionary measure.

“I think it is very important that the Dutch reports are also properly studied,” said De Jong. “We have to be careful with caution.”

The news is another step back from the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is crucial to Europe’s immunization campaign և հիմնական’s key to global recruitment strategy in poor countries, as it is cheaper and easier to use than Pfizer և Moderna’s competitors. It comes from the EU drug regulator two weeks after the vaccine did not increase the overall incidence of blood clots after such fears.

The European Medicines Agency said at the time that the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risks, but that it could not rule out a link between the shot and some unusual blood clots, and advised raising the risk of rare side effects.

Many EU countries, including Germany, resumed use of the AstraZeneca vaccine on March 19.

De Jong said the Dutch break comes next week before the EU drug agency updates on the AstraZeneca vaccine.
