NEW DELHI (AP) – New Delhi was closed for a week on Monday evening as the coronavirus blast intensified as the health care system in the Indian capital reached its limit.
Chief Minister Arvind Kerival told a news conference that the national capital was short of oxygen and some medicines.
“I’m not saying the system has collapsed, but it has reached its limits,” Kezhrival said, adding that tough measures are needed to “prevent the collapse of the health care system.”
According to the Indian Ministry of Health on Monday, Delhi reported 25,462 deaths և 161 deaths in the last 24 hours.
A total of 273,810 new infections were reported in India on Monday, the highest increase since the epidemic began today, and now reports more than 15 million infections, second only to the United States.
The Ministry of Health also reported that 1,619 deaths from COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 178,769. India has the fourth highest number of deaths after the United States, after Brazil and Mexico. Although it has almost 1.4 billion people, it has a much larger population than any of these countries.
So the death toll և deaths come just months after India thought it was the worst case of the epidemic, but experts say even those figures are underestimated.
Similar viral curbs have already been laid in the worst-hit Maharashtra state, where the financial capital of India, Mumbai, is located. Closing of most industries, enterprises and public places should take 15 days on Wednesday evening.
