Super League. How will disconnected competition work?

EN NEV (AP) – The breakaway Super League owned by the club in European football came closer to reality on Sunday.

The controversial project was long planned by elite clubs and was considered a threat to the UEFA football body, whose lucrative, successful goal is to replace the Champions League.

WHY now?

A meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee is scheduled for Monday at 9 am local time (07:00 GMT) in the Swiss city of Montreux, which will allow to approve the new expanded size of the Champions League, which will take effect in 2024. That program is now in jeopardy. The group of 12 clubs finally confirmed the rivalry of the 20 teams it proposed in the agreed announcements, when on Sunday it turned into Central Europe on Monday, at a time that seemed meant to appeal to new fans in Asia and North America.

In the starting group of the Super League there are clubs only from England, Italy and Spain. They are: “Milan”, “Arsenal”, “Atletico Madrid”, “Barcelona”, “Chelsea”, “Inter”, “Juventus”, “Liverpool”, “Manchester City”, “Manchester United”, “Real” և “Tottenham”. They want these three to complete the list of 15 so-called founding clubs. The most wanted clubs are most likely Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint-Germain from France. The 15 permanent members will be joined by five people who can qualify each year “based on the achievements of the previous season”.

The 12 clubs have not announced a launch date, although previous draft documents stated that the 2022-23 season. The founders will take control of the Super League from UEFA և to organize the competition և to manage it.

15 distributes at least 3.5 billion euros ($ 4.2 billion) in installments each year. In previous offers in January, the top six clubs are expected to receive € 350 million ($ 420 million) each.

The competition is scheduled to open with two teams of 10 teams playing each other in home-away games and midnight games in August. Each team will receive 18 guaranteed matches, compared to six in the current group stage of the Champions League, and 10 in the preferred size of UEFA after 2024. The top three teams in each Super League can reach the quarter-finals. The fourth- and fifth-placed teams would advance to the playoffs of two games to advance to the quarter-finals. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be a series of two-game knockouts, and the finals will be one game in a neutral place on the only weekend of the competition.

The clubs say they want to continue playing in their domestic leagues over the weekend. Juventus have announced that they will be ready to continue playing in UEFA club competitions until the Super League kicks off. The domestic leagues of UEFA, England, Italy and Spain are unlikely to allow this to happen. In each country, the national federation joined them on Sunday, promising to “remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project.” The removal of any Super League club from the traditional structure of European football is the strongest defense of UEFA և domestic tournaments.

The national teams will be affected

FIFA and UEFA have previously warned that players from Super League clubs will not be allowed to represent national teams in their competitions. The UEFA European Championship and the Copa America South America start in June. The 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers resume in Europe in September. Super League clubs have stated that they want to negotiate with FIFA, whose own statement on Monday expressed “disagreement” without completely closing the door on such a project. A previous document from the draft Super League described in detail how 12 of the teams could qualify for the extended 24-man Club World Cup, which FIFA wants to start in China, possibly in 2023.
