Return to the dining table

If you’ve eaten more often in front of the TV over the past year, or wandered endlessly over the phone over breakfast, you’re certainly not alone.

“Quarantine permissiveness” is what Susan Albers, a Cleveland Clinic psychologist and best-selling author who focuses on eating sensibly, is about to make bad habits during the epidemic.

But maybe it’s time to think back to the table.

It does not have to be fancy or elaborate, but setting a nice table can encourage you to sit down and eat with a good book with family, roommates or even a soloist.

“Eating should be an experience, something you enjoy,” said Dr. Albers. “You do not need to spend a lot of time eating, but when you do, pay full attention to it.” It means you put your phone down and sit at the table.

“Your phone should not be your dinner companion,” said Dr. Albers, who calls the familiar habit of eating with one hand and scrolling with another familiar, “eating a zombie.” But he admits that sitting at a table, standing in front of the TV, or eating without scrolling through your phone can be daunting, as “it is difficult to link the two behaviors when you do them on a daily basis.” This can be especially difficult if you work from home during the epidemic, or if you feel that eating on the couch while watching a show is another reward for another difficult day.

The good news is that sitting at a table և eating is not necessarily an unpleasant task. When you rearrange meals as special parts of the day, when you connect with loved ones or unwind alone, they become something to look forward to.

Fallon Carter, an event organizer based in New York, recently bought a new dining table. He found that eating the right foods during the epidemic was a great way to connect with him. “When you put a place, you put a belt,” he said, “you can turn anything anywhere into something special,” he said.

There should be no clutter about dining out, but a little effort can go a long way in making the experience enjoyable. Mrs. Carter added a floral arrangement to her dinner table with flowers she bought at Trader Joe’s. “It was not a big elevator,” he said with a laugh, but it made the area more attractive. He also offers to use napkins, proper glassware, to buy a variety of dishes that you really like.

Many people have become obsessed with cooking during the epidemic, and setting the table is a great way to make bread. Even if you prefer to take it or the microwave, the benefits of setting the table still work. No matter how you get your food, you can always move it to the right foods.

There are many good reasons to sit at a meals table, but do not strain yourself. The dishes are designed to be enjoyed. Mrs. Fallon suggests a little fun at your table if you want.

“Do not spare good things. You deserve good things. We were in an epidemic. “

Set the table with your favorite cloth napkins, dishes, glassware and dishes.

Add candles, flowers or something decorative

Turn off the TV and the phone and laptop in another room.

Sit with your feet on the floor և back to the chair (as in a restaurant).

Relax և enjoy your food.
