The Atlantic Coast Conference has canceled its semifinal 16 Virginia մրց Georgia և Tech game due to COVID-19 positive testing, quarantine և contact tracing within the Cavaliers program.
The league canceled its second tournament game in two days on Friday morning, less than 12 hours before the first of the two semi-final matches of the Yellow Jackets and Seminoles. That means Georgia Tech will advance to Saturday night’s championship game to face the winner of the North Carolina-Florida state game.
The cancellation came a day after Duke left the tournament, ending his season in a positive test before facing the Seminoles in the quarter-finals.
The Cavaliers (18-6) are the best leaders in the tournament, winning against Syracuse on Thursday with a 3-point win over Rize Bickman.
“This whole year was very different for everyone with test protocols, social distance, masks, making sure you didn’t really see the people out of your balloons,” said Sam Hauser, a guard after the Syracuse victory.
“We are quite proud of our boys. We have been very disciplined throughout the year ենք we continue to be, especially this time of year, when if you get such a COVID error, it could end your season. “We’re just going to keep getting the protocols right. We all need to be good.”
It is unclear how this could affect Virginia’s advance to the NCAA. The tournament will be held entirely in Indiana to create, instead of a balloon, what NCAA senior basketball vice president Dan Gavit called a “controlled environment.”
Tournament protocols include that each member of the team’s travel party will be required to take seven negative COVID-19 tests before leaving for Indianapolis. Gavit said the team could continue to play if it had five players through those safety protocols.
