MIAMI (AP) – Naomi Osaka’s 23-game winning streak ended on Wednesday when she lost 6-0, 6-4 to Maria Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
The defeat was Osaka’s first since February 2020, ending any chance of regaining a place in the semifinals this week from Ash Barty.
Osaka won its fourth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open last month, but has never reached the quarter-finals in five games in Miami.
In the match against Sakkari No. 23, Osaka lost 15 points in a row to fall behind in the second set 4. Gained an advantage of 1 point. He took a break in seven of his eight official games.
Sakkari took his sixth victory over his top five opponent in his career. He is still in the tournament only because he saved six points in the fourth round before defeating American Essica Pegula.
In the opening match, Osaka won 40-0, but did not score another point until the second set. When he stopped the drought, he was applauded by a small crowd, followed by his best tennis player.
But Sakkari gathered. From 40-0, he scored five points in a row, scoring the last thunderstorm to give him a 5-4 advantage. After that, he coldly delivered the victory.
