No. 23 Colorado Holds No. 24 USC 72-70 in Pac-12 Semifinals

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Colorado lost their top scorer McKinley Wright IV early in the game to South California.

Wright showed his toughness when he returned, and the Buffalons showed their toughness, bringing victory at the last second.

Another victory և they will be the champion of the Pac-12 tournament for the first time in nine years.

D’Shawn Schwartz had 3.3 seconds left with a rebound, Wright hit his elbow on the head to score 24 points, and Colorado, No. 23, lost 72-70 to Southern California No. 24 in the semifinals of the Pac-12 tournament on Friday night. ,

“The great thing about our team is that we do not panic,” said Colorado coach Tad Boyle. “This team just has endurance, a fight that is fun to play.”

Evan Mobley kept the USC (22-7) in the first half, dominating on both ends, finishing with 29 points, 9 shots and 5 blocks.

The 7-foot freshman also helped the Trojans gather with less than 4 points left in 4 1/2 minutes. He hit the penalty spot, then Tajj Edin scored the game with 35 points as a result of 3 points.

During Colorado’s last dominance, Wright came out with a 3-point lead, և Schwartz crawled along the starting line, hitting the ball down. Wright stole it, deflecting the pass intended for Eaddy to prevent the Trojans from the final blow.

“McKinley Wright pushed (Eaddy) right in the back և they did not call,” said USC coach Andy Anfield. “And that was the game.”

The third-placed Buffaloes (22-7) scored 12 of 24 points from 3 points to reach the Pac-12 championship game after winning for the first time in 2012. Colorado is ranked No. 5 in Oregon State. On Saturday

“One more thing, this is what we keep shouting in the locker room,” said Wright, who went from three points to four. With a score of 6. “It will not be easy, but we know to make pieces.”

The only ranked teams in the bracket had their hands full just to reach the semifinals.

USC needed two extra seasons to advance to No. 7 Utah to win the quarterfinals 91-85. Colorado had to overcome the first half of the abyss shooting and later spend 11-58 in California to win 61-58.

The buffaloes got off to a much better start in the game against USC, using the 11-0 run to climb to 14-6, but seemed to have a big loss when Wright fell on his elbow after contacting USC Chevez Goodwin. The unanimous guard of the first group “All-Pac-12” lay on the floor for a few minutes and had to help the dressing room.

Colorado did not seem to miss the shot, continuing the run, bringing the score difference to 20-6, և Wright returned a few minutes later.

Mobley, who started slowly against Utah, had 17 points from 12 of 8 shots to make it 39-30 on the pitch. The rest of the Trojans were 5 out of 17.

“Colorado tried to get in early, deny all our hunts, make everything harder for us,” said Edin, who had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists. “As the game progressed, we settled in a little bit and fell into a ditch.”

The USC fell into a large hole, managed to assemble, but missed one solid block, which was worth the game.

Wright proved he was one of the toughest college basketball players, and Colorado showed a bit of rudeness by restraining the athletic Trojans.

One of the reasons Colorado did not fall when Wright fell was Kishon Barthelemy’s game.

The freshman squad saw limited action in the final part of the regular season when he played behind Wright, but sparked the Buffalo while their leader was in the locker room. He hit a 3-point pair, finishing 3 to 4 shots with eight points in eight minutes.

“I’m so proud of Kishon, I’m excited about his future,” Wright said. “It is difficult for him to be a freshman, to stay behind, not to play too many minutes every minute. And he stayed strong throughout the season. “

Colorado will play Oregon in the title match on Saturday.

The USC must be a lock to host the NCAA Tournament.
