CAIRO (AP) – Rescuers rescued a 6-month-old baby from the rubble of a collapsed building as the death toll rose to 25, Egyptian officials said on Sunday.
The baby’s mother, father and sister had already been found dead, but teams were still searching for his missing older brother.
The condition of the three boys has been stable since Sunday, said an official of the country’s civil defense agency.
It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse of the building. An engineering commission has been set up to study the structural integrity of the buildings, Cairo Governor Khalid Abdel-Al said on Saturday. Another 26 people were injured.
Building collapses are not uncommon in Egypt, where poor construction is prevalent in shantytowns, slums, and rural areas.
In Cairo քաղաքում In the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, for example, in large cities with high-paying real estate, more lucrative developers often violate building permits. Additional taxes are often added without proper permission.
The government has recently launched a crackdown on illegal buildings across the country, imprisoning violators and, in many cases, destroying buildings.
