Merkel supports a “short, unified blockade” throughout Germany

Must read

BERLIN (AP) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday tossed her weight behind a “short, uniform blockade” as the country battled high levels of coronaviruses fueled by the spread of a more contagious variant first discovered in Britain.

The German governors, who are responsible for enforcing and eliminating viral restrictions, have recently taken different approaches. Some continue to advocate for limited reopening steps, while others support stricter termination.

Armin Laskhet, the governor who also leads Merkel’s Conservative party, this week called for a vague 2-3 weeks’ “bridge block” to control infections as Germany launches a slower vaccination campaign.

Laschett also called for a meeting of Merkel’s governors next Monday to coordinate restrictions, but met with resistance from her colleagues. Merkel’s spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said on Wednesday that “there is no majority” for that.

But Demmer said that “every call for a short, uniform block is right.” He said the data on new cases was not particularly good at the moment, as fewer trials were reported and tested during the testing holiday, but the rapid increase in the number of busy resuscitation beds “speaks very simple language”.

“Joint actions will be desirable,” he stressed. “The diversity of agreed rules does not currently contribute to security անվտանգ adoption.”

Merkel և 16 governors consult with the coronavirus every few weeks. Occasionally there is widespread criticism of the lack of patience, especially since governors have often taken different approaches to implementing the agreement.

Last month, Merkel և governors waved for hours before announcing plans to end the five-day Easter holiday. Merkel then dropped the plans less than 36 hours later, concluding that they were unworkable, and apologized to the Germans.

Meanwhile, the general elections in Germany on September 26 are casting a shadow. Many have viewed the proposal to block North Rhine-Westphalia Governor Laszczet as a result of speculation that he or Bavarian Governor Marcus Sawder will become the center-right candidate to replace Merkel.

Laschett has often called for more businesses to be set up, և Merkel recently criticized her country for failing to follow agreed-upon rules. Soeder consistently advocates for tougher restrictions. Currently, polls show that voters are significantly impressed with Souder. The decision on the candidate will be made in late May.

On Tuesday, Sawder told ZDF TV that he and Merkel had always supported Lachet’s last position. «

Germany’s infection rate is currently lower than in several neighboring countries, but it is still more than twice the maximum of 50 new cases per 100,000 population that the government would like to see.

There were 2.9 million cases in the country և 77,401 deaths since the onset of COVID-19 or with it. It gave the first dose of the vaccine to 13% of its total population of 83 million, while 5.6% received two doses. Officials hope the vaccinations will accelerate this month.

In addition to the vaccines already ordered, Sեդder said the Bavarian government plans to sign a preliminary contract with a company in the town of Illertisen that will allow it to receive 2.5 million doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, possibly in July if a shot is fired. Approved by the European Medicines Agency.

Russian company R-Pharm plans to start production of Sputnik V vaccine in Illertisen.
