Masters Day 2. When the Rose fades, the pursuing package closes

Astin Rose probably should have stayed in bed. The Englishman finished the second day with the Masters in the same place where he started, above the leaderboard, only to find the objects in his mirror, which were suddenly much closer than they could be seen.

“Of course,” said Rose, “I did not think it would be very good to score today.”

For everyone else, maybe.

Rose trailed 72 in her 65th round, allowing her opponents to squeeze most of the air from a four-shot pillow. On Thursday, he was one of three golfers to tour in the 1960s. The cloudy sky on Friday made the greens more receptive, վերջ at the end of the day there were more cards turned over, with 60 things on them, a total of 18 than you would see at Bingo night at the VFW.

“How hard it was to play this place,” said inin Thomas, who shot in ’67, “I felt it was as easy as it could be … many of my birds were pretty low stress or pretty easy.”

For all that, Rose’s 137 total in the middle of the tournament was still good enough to give Will Zlatoris և a one-point lead over Brian Harman.

Ala Alatoris, who competed in the Korn Ferry Tour last year, made the last three holes for the 68 with bird flu. He called his approach the 18th, his most satisfying swing in the region, “knowing that it would get me to the final group.”

Left-handed Harman, who did not think he would be able to qualify compared to last month, the last two jumped to 69.

“Every time you go up the list and see your name up there in Augusta, it’s hard not to get nervous,” said Harman. “I was nervous. “But it was nice to be with a good bird. I hit it well all day.”

He was not the only one. 2015 winner Jordan Wordan Spiet (68) և Mark Leishman (67)’s 139 rebounds. That, in turn, was better than one of the six boxes of 140 golfers, including Thomas, Tony Finau (66) և most likely Si Woo Kim (69).

Immediately behind the green in No. 15, Kim’s chip was very steamy, enlarging the cup before sticking to the front edge. His reaction was even more steamy. Kim hit her thrower on the grass and cut it.

“Have you ever done that before?” a journalist asked later.

Kim answered with a laugh. “Not in progress.”

He finished that hole by putting his passenger metal in the next three, which prompted a sharp exchange.

“Si Woo, do you have another fly?”

“No, I do not want to answer anymore,” he replied. “Sorry.”

Until Rose apologized, he had many regrets. He snatched the No. 1, tried a 67-foot bird, when the par-3 sixth could not climb the slope near the pin; under the exit.

But Rose regrouped, numbers 13, 14 և 16 with bird flu, so that even the day would return. Maybe it seemed like a great achievement compared to those 60s. Reigning champion Dustin John Onson, four-time winner Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Patrick Cantley, on the other hand, all headed for the finish line after failing to hit the 147th line.

After his round, Rose was asked why so many first-round leaders, even top players, are struggling to put together great tournaments in Augusta.

“It’s difficult. We did not understand that dynamic very much. Otherwise,” he smiled rudely, “we would have done better that second day.”
