LONDON (AP) – The Women’s Super League will benefit for the first time from popular free-to-air broadcasts in the UK when the BBC starts broadcasting live on its main channels and Sky starts paying for the rights.
The three-season deal is the first time the Football Association has made money from a separate domestic sale of women’s rights in a decade after WSL. The FA said it was a “multimillion-dollar deal” with Sky that would not exceed միլիոն 10 million ($ 14 million) per season.
Men’s Premier League games, usually played by subscribers in the UK, some of Europe’s only fully professional women’s league tournaments may have a larger audience from next season with at least one player on BBC One and BBC Two.
Previously, WSL games on the BBC were shown only on streaming or interactive television services, rather than on the two channels that appear above the digital programming guidelines.
“We are delighted to be offering the English Women’s Super League a free platform to provide the sport, and the players will be connected to the widest possible audience,” said Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport.
Most of the live games, at least 35, will be on Sky Sports, which will replace BT Sport as a paid TV partner of WSL, as it broadcasts in the Premier League. Sky is owned by Comcast, which broadcasts WSL games this season through NBC Sports Services.
Kelly Simmons, the director of the women’s professional game of the FA, said that the teams pursuing the glory of the Champions League will still depend on their own investments to buy silverware. But Simmons said WSL has now secured the most lucrative domestic television rights deal in the Women’s Football League.
“This is a remarkable deal, not only for WSL, but for the whole women’s game. “It will really help us grow and attract fans,” he said. “It is transformational. This is the mainstream, this is the main places of television, big audience, week after week. And I think it’s such an exciting move for a women’s game. “
Sky Sports or BBC non-games will be broadcast live via the governing body FA Player streaming service, which is internationally available.
