TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – On Thursday, for the third day in a row, Iran set a new record for coronavirus infection, reporting 22,586 new cases as the country following the Persian New Year holiday experienced heavy growth.

A new count of cases during the epidemic in Iran is pushing more than 2 million people, including 63,884 deaths after health authorities reported 185 new deaths per day due to COVID-19. The number of infections per day exceeded the previous record set on Wednesday by more than 1600.

Iran, which has been battling the worst coronavirus outbreak in the Middle East for more than a year, is in a big wave after millions of people ignored the government’s leadership to gather to travel to Nowruz, the country’s biggest holiday. The Minister of Health ordered the closure of insignificant shops in other major cities of the capital. At the same time, the nation’s vaccines are slowly spreading.

Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Larry on Thursday called on the more cautious public to avoid large gatherings, calling it a “moral and social responsibility.”

“The very dangerous situation of the disease in recent days has led to the loss of a number of compatriots,” he said. “But many of us still can not say ‘no’ to invitations to parties, weddings or funerals.”
