BEIJING (AP) – The Indonesian government says it is pleased with the effectiveness of the Chinese coronavirus vaccine used after China’s chief disease control official acknowledged that current vaccines offer low protection against the virus.
Nadia Tarmizi, spokeswoman for Indonesia’s COVID-19 vaccine program, said on Monday that the World Health Organization had found that Chinese vaccines had met the requirements by more than 50%. He noted that clinical trials in Indonesia for the Chinese pharmacist Sinovak vaccine have shown that it is 65% effective.
“It means … the ability to make antibodies in our body is still very good,” he said.
Researchers who conducted clinical trials of Sinovac in Brazil on Monday released new data confirming the company’s previously announced efficiency level of about 50%. The paper, which was published on the website for scientists չի has not yet been reviewed by peers, showed that the vaccine is 50.7% effective against symptomatic COVID-19 cases, much stronger against severe diseases.
Gao Fung, head of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told a conference on Saturday that existing COVID-19 vaccines were ineffective and that mixing vaccines was one of the strategies to boost their effectiveness. Those comments seemed to contradict the official history of China, which sought to boost the country’s vaccines and sometimes discredit its Western counterparts.
China has distributed hundreds of millions of doses of domestically produced vaccines abroad and relies on them to make its own mass vaccines.
Tarmizi said Indonesia would wait to see the results of any clinical trials before mixing the vaccines.
“We will wait, waiting for the clinical examination, to make sure that the idea or innovation will have a better efficiency, immunogenicity, efficiency level compared to the current situation,” he said.
Experts say that mixing vaccines or sequential immunizations can increase effectiveness. Researchers in the UK are studying a possible combination of Pfizer և AstraZeneca vaccines.
China currently has five vaccines used in its mass immunization campaign, three inactive viral vaccines from Sinovac և Sinopharm, a single vaccine from CanSino և in collaboration with the latest GAO team Anhui Zhifei Longcom.
Vaccine efficiencies range from just 50% to 79%, according to the company.
Pfizer և Moderna vaccines, which are mainly used in developed countries, have been shown to be approximately 95% effective in protecting against COVID-19.
According to Gao, as of April 2, about 34 million people in China had received two full doses of Chinese vaccine, and about 65 million had received one.
Globally, health experts say that any vaccine that is 50% effective will be useful, և many governments wanted to use Chinese vaccines as the richest countries in the world filmed Pfizer և Moderna shots.
On Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing would continue to provide developing countries with the urgently needed COVID-19 vaccine.
“China has provided anti-epidemic assistance to more than 160 countries and international organizations,” Wang said at a conference to promote the image of the central city of Wuhan, where the virus was first detected in late 2019.
