ICU cases have reached a new peak in the French virus wave

Paris (AP) – The number of patients being resuscitated in France on Monday exceeded the worst point of the last coronavirus wave in the autumn of 2020, another indicator of how the renewed crushing of infections is affecting French hospitals.

On Monday, the French government counted 4,974 patients with COVID-19 in ICU և hospital surveillance units. It passed the last high point of the 4919 ICU cases on November 16, when France also captured the wave of the virus and closed in response.

ICU admissions are increasing in double digits daily. Doctors are increasingly warning that they may have to turn to patients for BSM care, particularly in the Paris area.

“We are in a state of crisis,” said Dr. Ques Ak Balaout of Pierre Beregu Hospital in Nevers, Burgundy. His hospital’s 12-bed intensive care unit can accommodate COVID և non-COVID patients.

“We will see if we can continue. “It all depends on the infection,” he told the Associated Press over the weekend. Virus restrictions in his region were tightened last week as the government increased it in the country’s most dangerous area.

When the epidemic first struck France, hospitals ended with more than 7,000 patients in the intensive care unit, which reached April 2020.

But during that initial tidal wave of infections, hospitals stopped treating non-COVID-19 patients to avoid overcrowding altogether.

This time, as happened in November last year, hospitals are not completely clearing their deck of non-viral cases. While some minor surgeries are delayed again, hospitals are still treating COVID և non-COVID emergencies by putting some ICUs under strong և deteriorating pressure.

A more contagious, more aggressive version of the virus, first found in Britain and now predominant in France, Balaout said. “We see a difference in virality between younger, younger patients, 40-50 years old, but also younger …” That includes people who do not have health problems, he said, who did not think they were vulnerable and likely to be hospitalized.
