Facebook users can appeal malicious content to a review board

LONDON (AP) – Facebook’s almost independent Orientation Board said on Tuesday it would begin allowing users to complain about posts, photos or videos that they believe the company should not allow to remain on its system.

The board said it would accept the cases of users who oppose content posted by others who have already exhausted Facebook’s appeal process.

Until now, users could only apply to the Board of Supervisors when their own content was taken over by Facebook. The company is able to transfer the cases to the board independently.

“Enabling users to appeal the content they want to remove from Facebook is a significant boost to the Board of Supervisors,” said Thomas Hughes, Director of the Board of Supervisors.

Last year, Facebook set up an oversight team to judge whether certain content should be allowed in its programs amid fierce criticism of its inability to respond to a wave of misinformation, hate speech or other harmful content. The board is authorized to make a mandatory decision that the messages or ads violate the rules of the company.

The social media giant regularly receives thousands of messages և accounts. About 300,000 of these cases have been appealed since the Board of Supervisors were formed, but the council prioritizes reviewing cases that may affect many users around the world.

The board said it has the technical capability to allow users to appeal to third parties to remove content while protecting their privacy.

In its latest decision released on Tuesday, the Supervisory Board upheld Facebook’s decision to remove a video of a Dutch user showing two faces in black painting the traditional image of children in the Netherlands, S. Pete. The council said the video violates Facebook rules that ban black.

The decision of the council on the move of Facebook to suspend former US President Donald Trump indefinitely is still pending, the decision is expected soon.
