WASHINGTON (AP) – President Biden, once a regular Amtrak rider, plans to help the country’s rail system celebrate 50 years of service on Friday.
As a U.S. senator, Biden was the driver of the Amtrak train at his home in Washington, D.C., in Delaware, Wilmington, when the Senate was in session. He continued to run Amtrak as vice president. He was sometimes called “Amtrak e o”.
But for security reasons, the presidential train is unlikely to take place. Instead, Biden will travel to Philadelphia for the Amtrak celebration at his busy 30th Street station. He will be introduced by a conductor who worked on the route while Biden was a regular, while the next-generation Amtrak Acela high-speed train is expected to be on display next year.
“He knew everyone at the station, the conductors, as well as other people, as well as the people of Amtrak who were on the train for those many years when he was running the railroad,” said Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn.
“He was in regular contact with them, he knew a lot about them, I think that’s why he was worried or wanted to attend our 50th birthday,” Flynn said.
Biden’s arrival in Philadelphia, his third visit to Pennsylvania, came as he celebrated the first 100 days of his presidency. It follows a speech in Congress on Wednesday that outlined its $ 2.3 trillion jobs, infrastructure plan, and estimated $ 1.8 trillion in education, child care, and other family needs.
The Amtrak party will be Biden’s last stop on a post-election tour to sell infrastructure, jobs and family plans. He campaigned in Atlanta on Thursday and plans to land in Yorktown, Virginia on Monday.
The infrastructure proposal will provide $ 621 billion to improve roads, bridges, public transit and other transport infrastructure. Of that, $ 80 billion will be spent on repairing Amtrak, improving service along the Northeast Corridor, and expanding service in the United States.
Amtrak said after Biden announced the plan that the corporation would modernize, expand the service, including adding 30 new routes, adding trains on 20 existing routes in the US by 2035. born Nashville, Tennessee; Columbus, Ohio; Pyunik; Las Vegas; Houston; Dallas; ին Austin, Texas, if approved by Congress.
But while the $ 80 billion is a significant investment, that amount will not go far in terms of high-speed rail financing. Amtrak estimates that it owes $ 31 million to repair its trains in the Northeast Corridor alone, and transport analysts say the addition of new lines to the region will make it easier to use the remaining resources.
The Senate Republican countering of Biden’s plan, totaling $ 568 billion, will provide a much smaller $ 20 billion to the U.S. Railroad.
Amtrak was created after President Richard Nixon signed into law the Railway Service in 1970.
Biden’s lifelong partnership with Amtrak began shortly after the start of rail communication in May 1971.
His first wife, the baby girl, were killed in a car crash in Delaware weeks after being elected to the Senate. His youngest son, Bon և Hunter, was seriously injured.
Biden considered resigning from the Senate, but eventually resigned. After that, he decided to return home from Washington every night to be with his sons, and the vehicle was an Amtrak. He made the turn every day when the Senate was in session. For 36 years, he held that throne through his current marriage to his current wife, Ill, through the birth of their daughter, Ashley.
He was on the train when he was Vice President Barack Obama. After he and Obama were elected, they boarded the Amtrak train in Washington for the inauguration ceremony.
Biden also drove an Amtrak during the 2020 campaign. He wanted to rebuild the train in 2009 for his own inauguration in January, but those plans were canceled after a revolt by supporters of President Donald Trump near the Capitol.
When he returned to Delaware after the end of the Obama administration, Biden told CNN that he had made more than 8,200 tours and traveled more than 2 million miles over Amtrak.
In 2011, Amtrak renamed its Wilmington, Delaware Railway Station after Biden.
