WASHINGTON (AP) – President Biden on Tuesday focused on the future of the electric car, which he envisions for the United States as a way to combat climate change.
Biden is touring the Ford Electric Vehicle Center, a new plant being built on the site of the automaker’s massive Rouge complex in Dearborn, Michigan.
The president visited the day before when Ford was due to release details of the entire electric version of its lightning-fast F-150 pickup truck.
Biden has proposed a $ 2.3 trillion infrastructure project to help transform the automotive sector by making gasoline-free cars more basic. He sees the reversal of electric vehicles as a key part of his program to combat climate change.
Biden wants to pay for infrastructure package by raising corporate taxes. Leading Business Groups Many Republicans oppose raising the corporate interest rate from 21% to 28%.
He also has to overcome a big obstacle until the future of zero emissions of his electric car becomes a reality. Lack of stations where people will be able to start and run their engines.
To that end, Biden has proposed $ 174 billion for electric cars. These amounts include discounts, incentives for consumer purchases, and money to build 500,000 refueling stations by 2030.
The widespread presence of gas stations will help alleviate drivers’ fears of being left in a powerless car, which is one of the challenges facing Ford և General Motors as these companies try to access electricity.
The White House notes that the United States has a share of the electric vehicle market that China has, a third, շատ much fewer public charging points և needed to reach it before it can take the lead.
At Ford, its F-Series pickup, including heavy-duty versions, has been the best-selling car in the United States for 39 years. Last year, the company sold more than 787,000 trucks, despite having to close factories for eight weeks at the start of the coronavirus epidemic.
During the normal year, Ford sells about 900,000 F-Series pickups.
Trucks are a huge cash cow for Ford. A study by the Boston Consulting Group found that the F-Series generated $ 42 billion in revenue for the US automaker. That’s more than just such complete companies as McDonald’s, Nike և Netflix.
The F-150 Lightning electric truck, which will be on display in the middle of next year, will come at a time when only a few in the United States are ready to leave gasoline-powered vehicles.
In April of this year, automakers sold a total of 107,624 fully electric vehicles in the United States, almost double the number for the same period last year. EV still accounts for only 2% of US vehicle sales, according to Edmunds.com.
Ford announced last year that it was building an electric vehicle hub, and said it would work with 500 people to build batteries and assemble the F-150 Lightning. The exterior of the plant is finished, the interior is being worked on.
Biden also called for the transition to electric vehicles as a way to create jobs in the well-paid American Union for next-generation transportation. Critics of his plan say his taxes “leaving fossil fuels will increase business costs” may cost jobs.
Studies have shown that every electric vehicle sold reduces emissions, although it takes several years to reach that point if coal is used to generate electricity to charge cars.
