LONDON (AP) – A painting of Banksy honoring British healthcare workers in the epidemic sold for a record 16 16.8 million ($ 23.2 million), Christie’s auction house said on Tuesday. Proceeds from the sale will go to health care providers and charities across the UK.
The work of the mysterious street artist, entitled “Game Changer”, first appeared on the wall at Southampton General Hospital in the south of England during the first wave of the epidemic. The white-and-white picture shows a young boy sitting on the floor playing with a nurse toy superhero as Batman և Spider-Man figures lie in the trash next to him.
When it rose, the hospital said Banksy had left a note for the staff. “Thank you for everything you do. I hope this brightens the place a little, even if it is only white and white. ”
Christie’s says the sale price is a world auction record for Banksy. The auction house said it would provide “a significant portion” of the buyer’s surcharge to health care providers.
The reproduction of the image will remain in the hospital for patients, visitors and staff, Christine added.
“Banksy is an extraordinary artist who is a constant barometer of national sentiment,” said Katharine Arnold, who heads the auction house for post-war European Contemporary Art. “With the perfect image of a little boy playing with his superhero doll, a nurse coaching the International Committee of the Red Cross, he has captured the essence of this moment in time.”
The sale came on a day when Britain observed a minute of silence to mark one year since Prime Minister Boris John Onson ordered the first national blockade.
