You know that saying unhappiness loves company.
Well, the early success of the Pac-12 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, four teams of the “Sweet 16”, no doubt, felt lonely from Washington these days.
The conference sent five teams to the Big Dance, and no one had higher seeds than Colorado No. 5.
Oregon, UCLA, USC և Oregon is still dancing. With no more than two teams left in the Men’s Tournament of any other conference, the Pac-12 set an astonishing record, including the Ducks’ first unbeaten run.
Examining the first week of the tournament, as it relates to the Huskies (overall 5-21 4 4-16 Pac-12 this season), is like taking the Rorschach test.
Looking at the black ink blobs, trying to draw any kind of conclusion, says more about you և your state of mind than anything else.
So if you’re watching the tournament this weekend and looking forward to Washington’s future, you’re one of the half – full people I envy.
But I must admit that I have never had such a relationship with my favorite sports teams. What can I say, I grew up a fan of the Cleveland Browns եր Cavaliers և I became part of the city’s MLB team.
So if you’re a fan of Husky բան something like me, the Sweet 16 field, which includes four Pac-12 teams և your two bitter northwest rivals in Oregon և Gonzaga, should be the worst case scenario, taking shame
Given the state of the Husky program, which lost five passes this week, և currently playing only four returnees playing a game, you should wear purple goggles to see the future in which Washington plays a meaningful post-season game.
Of course, the Husky optimist would say take a look at Oregon, which was last selected in a Pac-12 pre-season media poll. The Beavers are the epitome of March madness, while overcoming low expectations by winning the Pac-12 Tournament, the No. 12 draw in the NCAA Tournament, prevailing as 6 և 8.5 points unnoticed.
But let’s dig a little deeper into this.
Compared to the 2020-21 lists, Washington had an excellent collection of talent, at least on paper, which included McDonald’s all-American և four four-star recruits (Quade Green, Jamal Bey, RaeQuan Battle և J’Raan Brooks) ranked ESPN nationally. Among the 100 best prospects.
By comparison, the state of Oregon has only one player in the top 100 ESPN recruits (Ethan Thompson); 91-71 in their only game in February. 4:
UCLA և The smaller USC were sleepy giants when coach Mike Hopkins took Washington to the 2018-19 Pac-12 regular season title և 2019 NCAA Tournament. But over the past two years, the Huskies have lost their dominance over Los Angeles schools, effectively weakening their position in the Southern California recruitment market, which is vital to every West Coast project.
And if that wasn’t the case before, Dana Altman is arguably the best Pac-12 men’s coach. Since his arrival in 2010, Oregon has been 280-109 (720). 14-6 in the NCAA Tournament with five Sweet 16 appearances.
For UW fans, the only thing that Ducks still play basketball this season is the undefeated Gonzaga, who is racing in the national championship.
The Huskies somehow managed to compete with Spokane’s small team despite losing 13 of the last 14 games at the crossroads.
Faithful UW followers spread the false story that the Zags’ march to college basketball dominance would be much more difficult, և perhaps impossible if they played in the Pac-12 rather than the West Coast at the super conference.
But if Gonzaga, the record holder, wins four games to become the first undefeated NCAA champion since Indiana in 1976, it will be impossible for Husky fans to ignore the yard bulldogs.
Historically, Washington և Gonzaga has not always been caught in the same recruiting pond, allowing the Huskies to pursue high-profile prospects to win over the talent of the state’s high schools.
However, the Zags are now moving to five-star, one-of-a-kind prospects that were previously UW domains.
Last year, Gonzaga signed ale Alain Suggs, the No. 6 overall team, which is expected to be the third qualifier for this summer’s NBA.
On Friday, the Bulldogs received an oral commitment from Hunter Sallis, a five-star bodyguard who is the No. 6 overall team for the 2021 class, 247Sports.com reports.
And Jim Hockey, the former head of Hopkins, did not show him any favors either, while the 11th issue of Syracuse led to an unexpected Sweet 16 look.
During the 75-72 victory in the first round, “Orange” took the 3rd place in the state of West Virginia և 37.1% hit the gates of the field, forcing 14 turns.
In the second half, Syracuse strangled the 6th state of San Diego for a 78-63 victory, and kept the Aztecs from the field with 22.6% shots from դիմաց 3 to 20 (15%) from the city center. SDSU, which was 26 points behind և attacking in attack, could not enter the ball դիմ in the last minutes turned to the deeply disputed trio.
It was a brief reminder of what Zone 2-3 should look like, Hopkins’s favorite defense, which he has had to leave in the middle of the season for the last two years, and how devastating it can be when done properly.
The only good thing about this Sweet 16 for Washington fans is Oregon and Gonzaga seem to be in a clash for the Elite Eight.
But if that happens, Husky’s opponent will reach the final four, which will be unbearable from the point of view of UW.
