Amazon is experimenting with a premium service that allows customers to choose furniture or appliances to assemble as soon as they get home, according to people familiar with the program.
The move, if widely accepted, will help the world’s largest online retailers compete more effectively with Wayfair, Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe’s, which all offer similar options.
Amazon plans to launch the service in two other markets in Virginia, says one person who asked for anonymity to discuss an internal matter. The company now offers scheduled delivery of large items, such as bunk beds, treadmills, and a specific room in a buyer’s home. But customers are often disappointed when shippers refuse purchases not collected in large boxes.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The new service requires drivers to open the packaging, collect the items, remove the packaging, take the product back if the customer is not satisfied, says the presentation studied by Bloomberg. In the past, customers had to hire another contractor to come to their home at another time to collect the goods, assuming the service was even offered at their location.
The training video shows the delivery of the bed-mattress set, as well as the sofa-ottoman side, which is quite simple to assemble. Drivers can be trained to install appliances such as washing machines, dryers and dishwashers, according to one person, posing a special threat to Home Depot, Lowe’s և Best Buy, which also sells equipment installation services.
The new offer simplifies existing Amazon Home Services, which is available in a limited number of cities, allows customers to hire contractors through the site to assemble furniture or ceiling fans, and install wall-mounted TVs. The new service is designed to make shipping more convenient, cheaper and easier for Amazon, says one person.
Demand for larger items – tables – office chairs, which rose during the epidemic as millions of people retreated from their homes. Shoppers have also become more comfortable buying large tickets online, which they used to prefer to buy from a store where they can lie on beds or sit on sofas.
According to Coresight Research, by 2020, furniture առցանց home sales jumped 41% to $ 36.1 billion. Sales are expected to continue to grow this year, albeit more slowly, to $ 37.3 billion. The surge in demand for large items created delivery accounts և delays of several weeks, allowing Amazon to quickly establish its reputation for fast delivery of items such as furniture.
The Seattle-based e-commerce giant is struggling to match Wayfair’s escaped success, which replaced Amazon in 2019 as the largest online retailer of US goods, according to 1010Data. Amazon has its own label of furniture brands և In 2019, Showroom launched a virtual reality shopping feature that lets shoppers see what the furniture will look like at home.
