H. I have a Dell All-in-One that is a little older but works well for me. Now that Microsoft has closed its Bellevue store, I can no longer get expert, practical help from the good guys who fixed Windows 10 update bugs.
My Dell camera has been working well for years. I recently found out that the camera does not work anymore!
In the old days, I could just call the Microsoft Store, make an appointment, and get a PC for a computer that came with Microsoft updates. It turns out that, according to Microsoft support, the problem is the upgrade of Microsoft Windows 10, which eliminated my built-in camera drivers.
Dell tells me to go with the attached camera – it will solve the problem because Dell does not have drivers that they will have to solve the problem caused by Microsoft. This is an old-fashioned way of pointing the finger at the computer user in the middle. Can you help?
– P. Gerald Marra, Bellevue:
A: I wish I had a simple solution for you. The problem ultimately stems from the fact that Microsoft Windows is an “open” operating system. That is, Microsoft encourages third-party developers to build hardware and software that run the operating system. It promotes innovation; a competitive market raises costs for consumers.
Downside Third-party developers often have to upgrade software ծրագր device drivers when a new version of Windows is released.
Here is the problem. While your computer may work just as well years after your purchase, it has probably been replaced by newer models on the market. Therefore, it is possible that the number of users of this model of computer has decreased over the years. As a result, over time, there is less incentive for third-party manufacturers to invest in drivers for that camera to work properly with the new version of the operating system.
So who’s to blame, Microsoft for making changes to the operating system, or a third-party developer who does not want to spend money on updating drivers for older devices?
Microsoft offers some solutions that may allow some programs to work that are no longer compatible with the operating system. First, you can run the program by solving the compatibility problem. If this does not resolve the issue, you can try running the program or the program in “compatibility mode”. Instructions for both options can be found here.
If no precaution, compatibility mode, your camera does not work, I’m afraid that your only choice is to either get a new camera compatible with your operating system or not upgrade your operating system. If your computer is connected to the Internet, it is risky not to install operating system updates.
H. My old HP Pavilion SD port (upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10) no longer responds to the SD card I installed. It worked well just a few months ago, but now there is no response at all. The voltage LED lights up (և stays on), but nothing happens. What do you recommend doing?

A: I guess you do not want to spend a lot of money to put a new SD port on your old laptop, do you?
If so, I would just buy an SD card reader that plugs into a USB port. Depending on the size of the yard, only one or two toys will fit.
